In 2022 October 15 I attended the State University of New York at Fredonia. Here I met the creator of the artist’s book and printmaker, Prof. Timothy Frerichs.
Prof. Timothy Frerichs two times participated in the “International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius”, in 2015 and 2018. In the “7th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2015” prof. Frerichs exhibited his beautiful artist’s book “Anthropocene – Shale”. His artist’s books has not only deep conception, but also deals with different printing methods, different materials like lightweight, semi-transparent handmade paper and heavy rusted metal or stone, or wood found on the beach of the lake.
“Quite distinctive work “Anthropocene – Shale” was presented by Timothy Frerrichs (USA). It’s a multi-layered metaphor, a real charade, provoking one to analyze its composite parts: the object resembles the form and structure of spalled rock, a shale in particular. Simultaneously it’s also the medieval miner’s book Re De Metalica, or, more precisely, fragments of its illustrations. Thick layer of papers with lines of ancient carving “split” by fragments of the images make it resemble the speckled texture of the rocks and its layers.” – wrote the art critic Dr. Jurgita Sprindžiunienė in the article “There is no mistaking in the works of professionals” about the Artist’s Book Triennial on theme “Error”.
In the “8th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2018” Prof. Timothy Frerichs presented the artist’s book “Current(s) 2 Thermohaline Circulation”.
In 2019 prof. Timothy Frerichs was the coordinator for the “8th International Artist’s Book Triennial Vilnius 2018” in the Reed Library in Fredonia, US.
„Prof. Timothy Frerichs received a Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. A Professor of Art, Frerichs is the Coordinator for the Foundations Area and teaches Printmaking, Artist Books, and Paper Arts. Frerichs has received numerous awards including a 2015 State University of New York at Fredonia President’s award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, two Fulbright awards to Germany, a Netherland-America Foundation Cultural Grant, a Constance Saltonstall Foundation Grant for Printmaking, and a Scandinavian-America Foundation Fellowship to Sweden. Frerichs’ drawings, prints, artist books, and installations have been widely exhibited nationally and internationally. His artwork is included in international and national public and private collections.“
